How to tell a fundraiser story people understand

Practical Crowdfundme guidance you can use before, during and after campaign review.

A strong fundraiser story helps people understand the need, the people involved and what their support can make possible. Clear does not mean dramatic. It means specific, honest and easy to follow.

Start with the reason this fundraiser exists

Open with the situation in plain language. Explain what happened, what is needed now and why the fundraiser matters. Avoid making readers work through a long introduction before they understand the purpose.

Introduce the people, place or organisation

Give enough context for supporters to understand who the fundraiser is for and your relationship to the beneficiary. Use names and personal details only when you have permission to share them.

Explain what support will help achieve

Describe the practical outcome you are working toward. If the campaign supports several needs, group them into clear uses of funds rather than one vague total.

A useful story structure

  • The situation: what is happening and why support is needed.
  • The people: who is affected and your relationship to them.
  • The plan: what the fundraiser will support.
  • The goal: what success would make possible.
  • The invitation: ask people to donate, share or follow the campaign.

Use detail without oversharing

Specific details build understanding, but unnecessary medical, identity, financial or family information can create privacy risks. Share only what is relevant to the fundraiser and what the people involved are comfortable making public.

Review before you submit

  • Can someone understand the fundraiser in the first few sentences?
  • Is the beneficiary relationship clear?
  • Does the story explain how support will be used?
  • Are the facts accurate and current?
  • Have you removed details that do not need to be public?
  • Does the final paragraph tell readers what they can do next?
